West Nusa Tenggara

Nusa Tenggara Barat

This 20,153 km² province is renowned for its seaweed production and tourism, but access to schools, especially in remote areas, remains challenging. Low family incomes, high rates of child marriage, and child abuse compound the educational challenges. The 2025 Education Report noted that only 64.6% of public elementary school students and 38.8% of madrasah students achieve minimum literacy standards.

Since Phase 1, INOVASI, as an Australia-Indonesia partnership, has been helping the West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) government ensure that all children, without exception, master basic literacy and numeracy skills and develop good character. INOVASI has partnered with the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) of Mataram University and the Central Lombok Regency Government to strengthen these core skills. We developed ASI ASLI, a digital application that helps teachers assess elementary school students’ reading abilities and adapt teaching methods accordingly.

Through the Learning Leadership Program, we train principals to utilize academic data to make decisions and supervise learning. Together with the UI Gender Research Center, we research the impact of child marriage and communicate our findings to stakeholders so they can advocate for children’s rights—especially girls—to remain in school.

INOVASI also supports the establishment of Disability Service Units at the provincial and district levels, trains teachers to address learning barriers for students with disabilities, and incorporates climate change issues into the curriculum and learning materials.

Through cross-sector collaboration, INOVASI strengthens literacy, numeracy, and character building of elementary school students, particularly in the regencies of Central Lombok, West Lombok, Dompu, East Lombok, and Bima.
