What is INOVASI ?
Who are we?
The Innovation for Indonesia’s School Children (INOVASI) Program is a partnership between the governments of Australia and Indonesia. Working directly with Indonesia’s Ministry of Education and Culture, INOVASI is seeking to understand how student learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy can be improved in diverse primary schools and districts across Indonesia.
INOVASI is working in a range of locations across Indonesia, including West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), North Kalimantan, and East Java.
Indonesia has made considerable improvements in access to basic education, but the quality of Despite more children having access to learning opportunities, with government spending doubling over the past 15 years, this has not resulted in better learning outcomes. Tests comparing student knowledge and skills in basic literacy and numeracy show that Indonesian students underperform compared with their regional and global peers.
A distinctive approach: local solutions to local learning challenges
Many reform initiatives trying to improve student learning outcomes in Indonesia have often implemented a ‘one size fits all’ solution. This does not always result in sustainable outcomes, and is not always relevant for Indonesia’s diverse cultural contexts.
INOVASI uses a distinctive approach to develop pilot activities and find out what does and doesn’t work to improve student learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy. This approach draws on the Problem Driven Iterative Adaptation (PDIA) process, and sees INOVASI working and learning directly with local partners to explore and identify local problems, and co-design local solutions.
By using this approach, INOVASI is confident that final pilot activities will be a success because they have been designed by the very people who will use them.
