North Lombok

Pilot: Emergency Schooling and Early Grade Literacy

North Lombok has faced an uphill battle since the district was severely affected by a 6.9 earthquake in early August 2018. In the spirit of finding local solutions to local issues in education, INOVASI began to rapidly work with local stakeholders to devise new strategies for improving educational quality in the after-math of the earthquake. This includes psycho-social counselling, partnering with a local organisation called ABKIN (Indonesian Guidance and Counselling Association). In addition, INOVASI led a rapid assessment of partner schools (school building data collection) and will continue to support the construction of Bamboo Schools, while damaged school buildings are repaired in the coming months. This re-designed pilot commenced in September 2018 and finished in July 2019.

Pilot: Early Grade Literacy and Provision of Books (Yayasan Tunas Aksara)

Saya Suka Membaca (SSM) Program from Yayasan Tunas Aksara works to improve literacy outcomes for school children across Indonesia, and specifically those from poor communities. SSM aims to transform the way that Indonesian children are taught to read by equipping classroom teachers with the knowledge and skills they need so that the children in their care are taught reading effectively, and are able to read with fluency and understanding at the start of their education.

Program focus: Literacy and books

“Lombok Utara Suka Membaca” implemented by Yayasan Tunas Aksara with their SSM (Saya Suka Membaca) Program proposes to work with DFAT and INOVASI and INOVASI partner local education department / schools to work to improve literacy in early grades (especially grade 1 and 2).  SSM plans to work with 12 schools from Kecamatan Tanjung (Gugus Jengala), and 2 neighbouring schools from Madrasah Ibtidaiyah. In implementation, SSM will equip their 28 Grade Class 1 and 2 teachers with Saya Suka Membaca (SSM) training, curriculum, materials and mentoring.

This will give teachers the understanding and skills they need to teach reading effectively and in an engaging way, taking children from learning bunyi huruf (letter sounds) to being able to read simple words, short sentences and eventually short paragraphs and books with understanding. SSM will also provide each school with a ‘Library in a box’. This will enrich the reading environment for Grades 1 – 3 at the pilot schools.”

  • Improved teachers’ teaching practices
  • Increased students’ interest in reading

Pilot: Guru BAIK

The INOVASI Guru BAIK (Belajar, Aspiratif, Inklusif and Kontekstual) pilot supports teachers to nominate, develop and test solutions to learning challenges they face in the classroom. Through a series of workshops and classroom-based mentoring activities, teachers are supported to discover what particular challenges children in their own classroom face. They then develop, test, review and iterate different solutions to address these challenges. As a result of the process, teachers become more reflective, competent, and are more confident to deliver the curriculum, use classroom assessment techniques, and solve problems as they arise in the classroom.

This was INOVASI’s first pilot running from January – May 2017 and implemented in 25 North Lombok primary schools with 50 teachers.

Pilot: Early Grade Literacy

This pilot aims to improve early grade student learning outcomes in literacy by enhancing teacher understanding of curriculum content, particularly the early stages of literacy development. It also seeks to improve teachers’ ability to use key processes for literacy development, such as formative assessment, and apply the most effective set of teaching activities and resources to their classroom context. Due to the August 2018 earthquake, which affected several INOVASI partner schools in North Lombok, the pilot underwent a change in direction and instead focused on emergency response schooling. In early 2019, the pilot resumed again in North Lombok. This pilot finished in July 2019.

Pilot: Literacy Boost

In partnership with INOVASI, Save the Children Indonesia implemented the Literacy Boost (known in Indonesian as ‘Gema Literasi’) pilot in both Sumbawa and North Lombok in NTB. In 2018, more than 200 teachers, principals and supervisors were involved. The pilot aimed to improve the literacy skills of grade two students. It did this by measuring how well students are developing basic reading competencies, and training teachers to help improve student engagement with reading. Tools to raise interest in reading included games, songs and stories. The pilot also sought to increase community involvement in literacy by providing books and libraries, sponsoring reading camps, and other learning activities. This pilot was completed in late 2018.
