Pilot: Early Grade Numeracy 2

This pilot, commencing in July 2019, builds on the units from the Numeracy 1 short course in the first half of 2019, which focused on foundational numeracy. In this follow on pilot, over a number of months and five units, teachers will gain a deeper understanding of how to apply key numeracy concepts in the classroom, including patterns, number exploration, place value, and addition and subtraction. Participating teachers will be able to gain credits to advance their careers and INOVASI will implement the courses in routine, cluster-based, teachers’ working group meetings, using local facilitators, to ensure the courses are affordable and scalable.

Pilot: Early Grade Literacy & Libraries (Rainbow Reading Garden)

Taman Bacaan Pelangi is a non-profit organization focuses on establishing child-friendly libraries in remote areas of Eastern Indonesia. Founded in 2009, to date, they have established 81 child-friendly libraries across 15 islands in Eastern Indonesia from Lombok all the way to Papua. In 2013, Taman Bacaan Pelangi received the “Nugra Jasa-dharma Pustaloka” Award from the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia for their literacy efforts.

Program focus: School libraries     

INOVASI and Taman Bacaan Pelangi’s program aims to nurture the habit of reading for children who live in remote areas in Eastern Indonesia, which will increase their literacy skills through the following: 1) establishment of child-friendly libraries in two local schools in each district. 2)  empowerment and capacity building of school teachers and  principals to manage child-friendly libraries and conduct reading programs. 3) establishment of a solid partnership/coalition with local stakeholders and partners – including Head of Education Office in the districts, school principals, teachers, parents, and local communities – and ensure post-program sustainability of the libraries.

Location: East Sumba, Central Sumba, Sumba Barat, and Sumba Barat Daya – East Nusa Tenggara

This pilot, commencing in the latter part of 2018, will work to strengthen basic literacy skills and support teachers to improve teaching practice and improve student learning outcomes. Over a number of months and units, teachers will gain a deeper understanding of how to apply basic literacy teaching approaches in the classroom, including reading, comprehension, the use of big books, and assessment. Participating teachers will be able to gain credits to advance their careers and INOVASI will implement the courses in routine, cluster-based, teachers’ working group meetings, using local facilitators, to ensure the courses are affordable and scalable. This pilot finished in July 2019.
