Pilot: Early Grade Literacy (UNM)

Pusat Sekolah Efektif of Makassar State University is a non-structural institution that focuses its tasks on collaboration with various education stakeholders in order to realize the implementation of effective and quality education in Indonesia. State University of Makassar (Indonesian: Universitas Negeri Makassar) is a Public University in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It was established on 1 January 1961.

Program focus: Literacy

UNM is forming a technical collaboration with a local university (UBT) to propose an integrated literacy training to be implemented by each university, UNM working in 12 schools in Bulungan and UBT working in 13 schools in Malinau. The technical lead of this program is UNM, however, contract agreements will be signed with both universities. The proposed program aims to do the following: 1) Identification of partnership mechanism between universities, schools and district education offices in order to improve literacy education in SD and MI; 2) Development of literacy training modules; 3)  Training of trainers from both UNM and UBT and local facilitators for gugus workshop facilitation; 4) Training of teachers through the teacher working group platform (KKG) 5) Identification of good practices in early grade literacy.

Location: Bulungan, North Kalimantan

Duration: 12 September 2018 until 11 July 2019

Achievement:

  • Increased students’ learning outcomes in literacy
  • Improved teachers’ teaching practices
  • Increased the number of reading corners in classroom
