Pilot: Early Grade Literacy & Libraries (Rainbow Reading Garden)

Taman Bacaan Pelangi is a non-profit organization focuses on establishing child-friendly libraries in remote areas of Eastern Indonesia. Founded in 2009, to date, they have established 81 child-friendly libraries across 15 islands in Eastern Indonesia from Lombok all the way to Papua. In 2013, Taman Bacaan Pelangi received the “Nugra Jasa-dharma Pustaloka” Award from the National Library of the Republic of Indonesia for their literacy efforts.

Program focus: School libraries     

INOVASI and Taman Bacaan Pelangi’s program aims to nurture the habit of reading for children who live in remote areas in Eastern Indonesia, which will increase their literacy skills through the following: 1) establishment of child-friendly libraries in two local schools in each district. 2)  empowerment and capacity building of school teachers and  principals to manage child-friendly libraries and conduct reading programs. 3) establishment of a solid partnership/coalition with local stakeholders and partners – including Head of Education Office in the districts, school principals, teachers, parents, and local communities – and ensure post-program sustainability of the libraries.
