The Storybook Collection (picbook) is a collaborative effort between the winners of the 2020 International Literacy Day (HAI) Competition, organized by the NTB LPTK Lecturers Association and supported by INOVASI. In addition to receiving prize money, the children’s story writers were given the opportunity to produce their own children’s storybooks. These children’s storybooks are expected to expand the repertoire of contextual reading materials for children in NTB.
INOVASI facilitated the writers’ participation in a workshop mentored by senior children’s story writers and professional illustrators under the auspices of the Lingkar Pena Forum. The workshop took place online over three sessions. During the workshop, selected stories were processed and packaged into a 24-page picture book format. A total of 15 stories were finalized, consisting of stories on K13 and inclusion themes.
After the storyline was created in pictbook format, the selected illustrators then took their roles. They created illustrations for each page of the pictbook. Four illustrators worked on these 15 pictbooks. On average, they completed the pictbooks in 10-14 days. Each illustrator brought their own unique style to their work. This resulted in a wide variety of illustrations for these 15 children’s story pictbooks.
The entire process of creating the Children’s Story Pictbook has been completed. This is the work of local writers and illustrators discovered through the 2020 International Literacy Day competition. The stories featured contain many local NTB content, both in the form of folk tales and everyday stories. This is expected to help children love reading and make it easier for them to understand what they read because it is close to their daily lives. Furthermore, the presence of this book is expected to be part of the revival of literacy culture in West Nusa Tenggara Province.
