Nusa Tenggara Timur
In Flores, Sumba, and Timor, which cover an area of 47,876 km², schools in remote areas lack quality teachers, facilities, and children’s books.
Some schools are also remote and difficult to reach, making it difficult for children to learn. The 2025 Education Report recorded an average literacy rate of only 52.7% in NTT, with striking differences in achievement between districts. For example, in West Sumba, less than 40% of public elementary school and madrasah students met the minimum standard, while in Nagekeo, more than 70% of public elementary school students exceeded this standard.
INOVASI Phase 3 is an Australia-Indonesia partnership to help the Maluku government ensure that all children, without exception, master basic literacy and numeracy skills and develop good character. Working with LPTK (Teaching Institutions) and the local government, we:
- In Phase I, we implemented the Early Grade Literacy and Early Grade Numeracy programs, reaching out to schools and teachers, and distributing non-textbooks.
- In Phase 2, we supported the emergency curriculum during the pandemic, training teachers in Nagekeo to utilize local materials for students.
- We are currently in Phase III, strengthening the competencies of lecturers, teachers, and principals through integrated training, including mother tongue transition in early grades, particularly in the regencies of West Sumba, Nagekeo, North Central Timor, East Sumba, South Central Timor, and Ende.
With a PDIA-based ecosystem approach, INOVASI prepares the NTT generation to be ready to face local challenges.
